ABOUT THE ASSOCIATION
The Gateway Alumni Association (GAA) is a union of all
students, past and present, who have worked at the Gateway,
the student newspaper at the University of Alberta, and is run by
a volunteer Executive Committee, supported by the Office of Alumni
Affairs. All former paid staff of the newspaper are members of the
Association.
Any volunteer who contributed five or more submissions—writing,
photographs, graphics, comics, administrative or editorial assistance
and design—that appeared in the Gateway is also a
member.
The GAA became an official chapter of the University of Alberta
Alumni Association in March of 2004. Since then, the GAA has tracked
down 800 lost alumni, began planning for the Gateway’s
95th anniversary dinner, and started working towards creating an
online digital archive of the newspaper in preparation for our centennial
in 2010. Explore this site for more information on your newest alumni
association.
past president's message
Steve Lillebuen, B.A; Founder, GAA
Perhaps I’m a bit biased, having spent six years at the paper
in various capacities, but I believe the Gateway is one
of the U of A’s, if not Alberta’s, most influential
institutions.
We are the watchdogs of one of Canada’s largest universities,
in perpetual motion as we take in green students and release them
on the world as published citizens year after year. In doing so,
tens of thousands read our paper.
While searching through the bound editions last summer, I noticed
a trend: there sure are of a lot of us Gateway alumni out
there. We seem to attract our fair share of hipsters, nerds and
a few raging communists who have since made their way on to professional
careers. We’ve gone on to work at major dailies, weeklies,
or magazines; some have become professors, graphic designers, business
leaders or government officials; and some Gateway alumni
have become Canadian icons, like former Alberta Premier Peter Lougheed,
Chief Justice Beverly McLachlin, and our favorite former Prime Minister,
Joe Clark.
I hope that our hard work in creating an alumni association pays
off. I hope that you’ll join us at our alumni reunions, read
our newsletter, keep our records updated, and donate to our digital
archive project. Our Gateway network stretches far and
wide, and we’d love to see you come out to our 95th anniversary
this fall.
